Barnacles tend to live in shallow and tidal waters, and encrust themselves permanently onto hard surfaces. They can be found on rocks, shells and boats, and on the body of whales, turtles, crabs, and other sea creatures. They symbolise the power we have within us to be strong and wilful.
Barnacles are an omnivore, a marine crustacean with an external shell. It feeds by filtering particles from the water using its modified feathery legs. Their diet is based on plankton and algae.
Fun fact: Barnacles have the largest penis to body size ratio of the animal kingdom. In addition to this, biologically they are hermaphrodites.
